Aldersons

Aldersons is an Australian legal and consulting firm led by Mathew Alderson.

Mathew is a commercial lawyer focused on IP, media, and entertainment projects. Much of this work is cross-border and involves international law, especially Chinese law. Mathew frequently handles transactions such as joint ventures, corporate partnerships, acquisitions, business sales, share sales, private equity raisings, investments, co-financings, and the appointment of agents, licensees, and distributors.

After more than a decade as a partner in the Beijing office of a US law firm, Mathew relocated to Sydney in 2023. While in China, he participated in unprecedented developments in streamed entertainment, representing several major Hollywood studios, a major American streamer, a foreign government, a British public broadcaster, and a British copyright collection society. He continues to advise American, British, and Australian companies of all kinds on their business dealings and IP protection in China. Mathew also now represents clients of his US firm in their investments and projects in Australia.

Before his time in China, Mathew was the managing partner of a mid-tier Sydney firm, where his clients included local and international magazine and book publishers, theatrical and literary agencies, advertising agencies, designers, record companies, and production companies. After obtaining his law degree at the University of Queensland, he started his career in-house with the management for one of the most successful bands in the world. Mathew currently leads the global legal team of a British media company, with responsibility for legal affairs in London, New York, Beijing, Tokyo, and Dubai.
